Midsummer

the longest day of the year

is past

the sun has come and gone

at last

spring's flowers fade in summer's

gleam

and autumn's leaves shall soon

be seen

the blazing heat belies

the chill

the waning days softly

foretell

another year is dying

slow

how many more i do

not know

the future with its rosy

hue

is full of things that i

must do

tomorrow soon becomes

today

and then my change has gone

away

the years pile up instead

of dreams

and all the ghosts of might-

have-beens

the garment of the life

i wear

is full of holes and so

threadbare

my thoughts are like the crows

outside

so loud with things i might

have tried

the years behind are like

this day

an echo of what cannot

stay

and so i bid the sun

adieu

to God the past make all

things new

shuffle step

I saw an old man walking

his shoulders softly drooping

the shuffle step

the weight of years

the questions never pausing

I gazed at him unseen

though rough his steps not stopping

from where he came

to where he goes

I knew I'd never know

Has time to him been kind

do memories haunt his way

of faces gone

what might have been

I mused on possibilities

He might have stayed indoors

decaying by the fire

yet on the eve

of death's new day

he chose to soldier on

Perhaps in hime I see

the path we all may tread

each day a chance

to venture forth

and see what lies ahead

lock the door

the years stretch out
i close the door
another task
another chore
five years past and gone
maybe more
have i lost myself
in the mundane

the strong bolt turns
pin tumblers slick
i think of nothing
that's the trick
to still the thoughts
that poke and prick
and keep me safe
from the truth

if i can forget
tomorrow won't come
where all the hopes
and fears are from
and all the things
i haven't done
might slowly and softly
creep away

early evenings

the darkness comes early
lasts longer than light
the cold's in the bones
there's no will to fight

the waiting seems endless
with false hopes and turns
when finally you grasp it
it no longer burns

'tween shadow and starlight
you can't find your breath
the glow of the sunrise
like waking from death

the sunshine breaks through
the golden leaves shine
for a moment you're lost
for a moment you're mine

but mostly the clouds
grey and heavy with rain
pour lead in your soul
sound an endless refrain

is the thing that you long
worth the price that you pay
can you live with the cost
at the end of the day

when the ache overwhelms
and you've nowhere to go
i'm holding out hope
where the rain turns to snow

so blow on that flame
when the night is too long
wrap your love with a bow
i'll come to your song

25 October 2025

the turning time

there's an aspen on my street

unusual at these heights

so near the sea

it stands tall and proud

a stranger in a strange land

of maples and ginkgo and dogwoods

all summer i watch the breeze

dance gaily through the leaves

singing a sighing song

of rocky mountains far away

still green and lush they wave

while distant cousins grow pale

and drift down in silent splendor

to the frozen ground

each year i think i'll watch

as green turns into gold

see the sap draw back the life

bury deep the hope of spring

year after year i wake

one day at the turning time

to a sudden flame of yellow

as if overnight the leaves changed

but this year it's different

the tips away up high

begin the glowing journey

i see the progression coming

as winter soon draws nigh

30 September 2025

it's fall again

will you come with me past the old oak tree
where the shivering aspen stand
when the frosty breeze stirs up the leaves
we can walk together hand in hand

as the shadows grow there are things you know
that I long to hear spoken softly
let the dying day whisk your cares away
give your heart to me so freely

it's the time of year when the end is near
and your soul feels the weight of time
with a dying grace and a warm embrace
we can find the sad sublime

the leaves that fall from the trees so tall
tell of glories that are past
of long summer days far from winter's gaze
and the shadows that it casts

I wonder still when I feel the chill
how my heart can thrill with pain
thinking of your smile that you shared awhile
though you never come again

in this season's change with its weather range
my emotions ebb and flow
and though lonely now I find hope somehow
something buried deep will grow

18 August 2025

solitary song

i turned a corner suddenly

the streetlight wasn't there

i listened as the summer breeze

spoke laughter in my ear

not knowing that the hours past

were full of empty toil

when winter winds come soon

the autumn fruit to spoil

year on year of working

a quest for wealth or fame

days not worth remembering

and they forgot my name

i looked in vain for glowing

to see the way to take

my path is not so clear

the choice is mine to make

the keys beneath my fingers

a lonesome song do sing

the words a melody

that means a different thing

i play alone in darkness

obscurity my friend

and sometimes hear the whisper

of how my story ends

24 June 2025

put it off

i'm out of time

or so i say

and put it off

from this today

the thing can wait

i'll do it when

tomorrow comes

it's fine 'til then

the whisper soothes

the day flies by

full of stuff

i'd rather try

a day a year

it comes and goes

words unwritten

tv shows

i'm older now

the hair is grey

and still i say

maybe today

it's all i have

this here and now

to paint the sky

and change somehow

the page is blank

and so i stare

in hopes my thoughts

will find somewhere

but nothing comes

and so i sigh

tomorrow waits

until i die

Adieu St Stephens

the winter sun glows kindly

through coloured windows soft

panes testify to ages past

130 winter suns come and gone

the dust shivers on sturdy beams

as the organ plays one last song

temporary braces still standing strong

as voices pass into memories

who will remember the passion

pews retired to halls and gardens

partitioned rooms where choirs sang

altars whisper of vows forgotten

the eve of the end casts shadows

can an empty space hold pain

once full of hope and life

now reduced to begging favours

the door shuts slowly firmly

what fills one and not another

keep the lamp stand in the midst

bring your first love home

18 September 2023

scars

my finger traces the lines

broken flesh sewn together

signs of healing never forgotten

no longer smooth

skin once soft and supple

now split by a jagged line

interrupted peace roughly torn

but stronger now

a bit of broken glass

a curious toddler's reach

now a white streak on a pink palm

remember when

longer wider shows one

tracing the shoulder blade straight

marks of a surgeon's skill and care

diseases battled

hidden from my keen touch

deeper lie the unseen breaks

whispered words that burn like fire

just yesterday

I marvel looking close

between the cracks I see now

a light come shining through my scars

becoming glory

27 April 2023

early blooms

each petal like a drop of blood

floats gently on the surface

rocking to a silent song

in water’s soft embrace

the edges brown as moments pass

death steals the bright away

and though the sun shines bravely on

the sky begins to grey

alighting on one rusting drop

a bumblebee reposes

until the weight tips the scales

and the water overflows it

one by one through time and chance

the liquid conquers all

‘til all that stays are memories

of a blossom that did fall

17 September 2022

miles to go

the miles roll into the thousands

as the asphalt ribbon ebbs and flows

waving fields of grass bend and bow

before the wind with few trees to break

silence lives in the middle of nowhere

heavy as the billowing clouds at dusk

testimony to words unspoken

a life unlived in exchange for endless sky

the promise of no walls to constrict

compensation for no arms to enfold

the plains keeps their secrets well

only a few know the allure and reward

of horizons that never disappoint

satisfaction in relentless labour

oblivion to restless millions captured

by the concrete prisons that are never still

stillness is a gateway to eternal peace

a glimpse of something yet to come

as the miles roll into the thousands

12 October 2021

the path narrows

aspens maples dying in a blaze of colour

the air biting through my windbreaker

early nights serenaded by falling rain

past dusky sunsets until misty mornings

faces turned upward to the sunlight

elusive and gentle through the clouds

as leaves fly before temperamental winds

i stumble down the path each solitary day

as sunbreaks follow chilly nights again

each day losing the battle against the dark

the window of daylight narrowing

as i smell the acrid scent of death

but around the way a sight appears

autumn crocus in lavender and white

a carpet of colour in the brownscape

laughing in life in the face of decay

and hope wells up in the straitness

though my limbs be weighed down

though the mist clouds my eyes

i will dance again in the dawning

when the narrow path ends

26 September 2021

when it rains

i'm not ready this year for the silver drops

caught between a summer to forget and

falling into a complicated tomorrow

all the dying that wells up like puddles

between the muddy tracks of life lived

without enough jars to hold the dreams

it's pouring down whatever i think so i

simply listen to the splash as shards

today's arrows attacking what was

screaming what is rather than could be

i pull the covers up almost over my head

is this crazy world really what has come

does a graceful way to tap out remain

or must i find a way to dig in damp soil

take the present tense and make it new

no reserves no retreats no regrets

a new level of living beyond skin-deep

how it tears the blood to find the way

each wet splash reminds me that it comes

watering the ground bringing change

death rearranges in the dark but life will come

if i can find the hope to not remain alone

23 August 2021

feverish

everything is too bright and loud

as i wrap my shawl closer and shiver

sweat pours down my side

in my brain it feels like fireworks

small blood vessels snapping in defeat

as the virus plows through my body

leaving destruction in its wake

i close my eyes and embrace oblivion

the only place i can escape the scourge

temporarily the day reminds me

as i wake to the energy bank depleted

trapped in skin tingling at the air

forcing myself to eat, stay awake

until i can find the dark quiet again

18 July 2021

hindsight

at just this moment a light comes at once

bursting and soft from the corner of my eye

obstructing my view and between yesterday

and always i can see right now with clarity

beyond tomorrow with all the what ifs and

maybes floating down like the house of cards

they are as in wonder i glimpse what lay down

the fork in the road knowing the dark thorns of

heartache and loss grew there as sure as if

i had walked it though i chose the other way

that i thought might be forsaken and at this

same moment i find it was actually paved

with roses and i find gratitude arising for

the wounds i did receive that brought growth

and no regrets and while i miss some of the

yesterdays i know always is close and i wrap

right now around me as i lift my hands to the light

05 July 2021

June Gloom

the longest day and a year half over

a chill down my spine

like the echo of December wind

as hopes become dreams

help my unbelief

the wet blanket of marine air

dampening activity

shutting summer down

so many wishes blown out in joy

grumbling gratitude

rose petals and cottonwood down

a carpet of dying comfort

plentiful food tipping the scale

as guilt rides in on the insulin rush

my thoughts multiply

July crashes in with pyrotechnics

the beginning of the end in denial

distracted by a kaleidoscope of colour

until the gloom of June fades

like a cloud of witnesses

gazing into a blue sky of forgetfulness

the light intoxicates with clarity

an inexorable change like the grim reaper

rides on the smell of woodsmoke

remember me

thoughts on borrowed time

excerpt from an old journal entry

what does it mean this idea of borrowed time? of living on borrowed time? the premise being that the thing that kills you has already been set in motion; that your days were numbered and they ran out but you're still living. but borrowed from who or where?

a search yields little fruit as to the historical footprints of the two words now joined, but it strikes me that in this mad game we call life every breath of every being is borrowed time. grace. borrowed from His blood. from our first gasp we exist under a death sentence and every moment is an opportunity lent us to plead the blood.

to recognise that our life is not our own. to breathe in grace and breathe out gratitude. we can never repay the loan but we can make good use of it. if I truly understood or saw the remaining grains of sand what would I do differently? how would I spend such a debt? what words would I say or leave unsaid?

borrowed from His blood. or could I see each moment as a heartbeat closer to time never ending? life borrowed from life everlasting--the chance to choose to never die or spend borrowed time until it runs out. what incredible mercy is mine.

Advent 2: Emmaus

2020 has been a year of death. Not as much actual death as the reaction and initial speculation belied, although that did happen accompanied by magnified attention which does nothing to alleviate sorrow. Rather death came in hopes deferred or destroyed. Weddings that couldn't happen. Celebrations cancelled. Trips never taken. Businesses and careers ended. Relationships broken. Truly a pandemic of lost hope swept throughout the world this year and leaves behind a global trauma that no one can say from how we can recover.

A couple millennia ago on a road in dusty Palestine two men explained to a third how a year had culminated in hopes and dreams dashed upon the ground. A man had come and for three glorious years he had spoken of a life beyond anything they could imagine. Freedom. A kingdom they longed for, although they glossed over "not of this world". Even as they didn't always understand his descriptions such as eating flesh and drinking blood, they clung to the belief that their imaginings of the longed-for Messiah had finally embodied themselves in this one man. After all, they had a rich history of a Red Sea parted, the sun standing still, and walls falling down. So what if Isaiah mentioned bruised and battered in his colourful description of the coming Saviour? No doubt God knew what was needed in this time.

The two men shared how people followed him, leaving their jobs and livelihood to wander throughout the land, learning at his feet. How he sent them out to share his words and they found every need provided and saw miracles. He even raised a dead man! Those three years were exhilarating and everything in them knew that the end would come for the oppressors and the promised land would once again blossom. The Romans and their puppet Herods's days were numbered.

Everything they hoped and dreamed, in one short day died. He died. He who had raised the dead, made the blind see, healed lifelong diseases, knew their deepest heart's desires, was laid dead in a tomb. Where could they go from here? They had staked everything they knew on him and nothing remained. To accept the disheartening truth would rearrange their world and their aching hearts could not see how to believe again. Where was Emmanuel in this moment? Why hadn't he done what he said he would do? And what to make of the extraordinary missing body?

Then He spoke. In the midst of death He showed how God is the One who does the impossible. He is the One who takes a hopeless situation and brings hope. Freedom to captives. Fruit to barren wombs. Life to dead people. And most miraculous of all, redemption to sinners. He spoke to the two men, showed them how, in a world consumed with death, the only way was to turn death upside down, beat the enemy at his own game. And still the two men wondered, struggling to believe how Emmanuel could come in such a package.

At the table, their eyes still clouded with confusion, He took an ordinary loaf of bread and broke it. He blessed it. And their burning hearts leapt as their eyes opened and they saw that His way of bringing dreams to reality took their narrow desires and transformed them, fulfilling them beyond any wild imagination they ever had.

Look up from the dusty road. In a year full of death and dung, can we see Him working to not simply fulfil the little dreams we have but to use us--if we are willing--to bring hope to many? As His death brought life, can we die to selfish habits and live to glorious joy? He is Emmanuel, even when the road is not the one we would have chosen. He is coming.

Weather Advisory

The rocking chair squeaked like an upset kitten as the old man leaned back and forth, his faded blue jean overalls patched up in the usual places. Outside the torrent showed no signs of letting up and to all appearances the road would be renamed Mill River by midnight. He muttered as the relentless drops kept up a steady beat as if the roof dreamed of being a timpani in another life.

I leant closer to hear.

"I lost it. I lost it. I lost it."

"What? What did you lose?"

He kept muttering, the repetition as metronomic as the raindrops. Like an occasional cymbal crash, almost as an afterthought I repeated my question when the muttering fluctuated in any way. The day began to slip into night without much more than dim turning dimmer and I considered finally giving up and passing on, but thought to try one last time. Perhaps the flickering streetlights, sputtering in the deluge, sparked his mind.

He stopped. His bleary eyes focused on me for the first time. His voice not more than a hoarse whisper, partly from age and partly from the incessant words, came so low that I leaned in to hear.

"I lost the way."

"The way to where?"

"Home."
